Clinical care for the lymphatic system

Olivia works with a precise, gentle touch designed to move lymph. Nothing about the session is rushed. Nothing bruises. What people bring

Presentations commonly worked with

Specialist Lymphoedema Care is a long-term clinical relationship rather than a one-off treatment. What people arrive with is a specific diagnosis and a wish for it to be well-managed.

  • Primary lymphoedema (present from childhood or emerging in adult life)
  • Secondary lymphoedema after cancer treatment — breast, gynaecological, head and neck, or other
  • Post-surgical lymphoedema after node removal or radiotherapy
  • Lipoedema requiring specialist manual and self-management support
  • Skin-integrity concerns associated with lymphatic compromise
  • Preparation for or recovery from major surgery where lymphatic care is called for
  • Long-term maintenance for people already well-managed but wanting continuity of care

Lymphoedema is a lifelong condition that responds best to consistent care. Olivia works alongside your GP, oncology team or specialist consultant where relevant. This is a specialist clinical service, not a general-wellness treatment — for the wellness version, see her Lymphatic Drainage Treatment.

What a session is like

From arrival to the last breath in the room

The first visit includes an Initial Assessment (a fifteen-minute add-on) for the full clinical picture. Sessions run sixty minutes.

  1. 01

    Arrival

Front door, herbal tea, up to the therapy room. If you have imaging, measurements from other clinicians, or compression garments already in use, bring or share them ahead.

  2. 02

    Clinical intake

A full lymphoedema-specific history — onset, current stage, current management, any garments, any recent flare-ups. Olivia takes measurements where they are useful for tracking.

  3. 03

    Manual Lymphatic Drainage

The primary hands-on element. Olivia works the specific lymphatic pathways relevant to your presentation, at the pressure the lymphatic system responds to (much lighter than a standard massage).

  4. 04

    Compression guidance

Review of any garments you use, fit check, wear-pattern advice. Olivia can help you source appropriate garments if you do not have them yet.

  5. 05

    Skin care and self-management coaching

Short, practical guidance on skin care, safe movement, and self-drainage techniques you can use between sessions.

  6. 06

    Follow-up plan

Olivia names the rhythm she thinks would serve — often more frequent early on, tapering to maintenance. Care is long-term where needed.

What the evidence says

Research and clinical literature

Manual Lymphatic Drainage and physiotherapy-led lymphoedema care have a substantial evidence base as first-line treatment.

  • Complete Decongestive Therapy (MLD, compression, exercise, skin care) reduces lymphoedema volume by twenty to sixty per cent across multiple randomised trials, and is now standard first-line care internationally.

  • Early physiotherapy intervention after breast-cancer surgery reduces lymphoedema incidence compared with usual care.

  • Structured self-management education alongside clinical MLD improves long-term quality of life measures in people living with lymphoedema.

Questions people ask

Before you book

Do I need a GP or consultant referral? +
No. You can book Olivia directly. She is happy to work alongside your medical team and can share notes with your consent.
What is Olivia's specialist training? +
Olivia is a chartered physiotherapist of fifteen years with specialist post-graduate training in lymphoedema management, including Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Complete Decongestive Therapy.
How is this different from a normal massage? +
The pressure and pathways are completely different. Manual Lymphatic Drainage works at a much lighter pressure than standard massage — the lymphatic system sits very superficially and heavier pressure closes rather than opens it. The pathway sequence follows the lymphatic anatomy rather than the muscular one.
Do I need to wear my compression garments to the session? +
Wear them as you normally would. Olivia will discuss the garment's fit and function as part of the session and can advise on replacement or adjustment.
How often will I need to come? +
Depends on stage and current management. New presentations often need a run of weekly or fortnightly sessions early on, tapering to monthly or quarterly maintenance once well-managed.
Can this help with lipoedema? +
Yes. Olivia works with both lymphoedema and lipoedema. Mention which at the intake so she can shape the session appropriately.
Do I need the Initial Assessment? +
Yes — please add the fifteen-minute Initial Assessment when you book your first visit so Olivia can take the full lymphatic history and specific measurements.
